How agility course time works
Standard course time (SCT)
The judge measures the course length (the ideal path a dog runs, in metres) and chooses a speed in metres per second for the class. SCT is simply length divided by speed. A 180 m course at 4.0 m/s gives an SCT of 45 seconds.
Maximum course time (MCT)
Under the FCI Agility Regulations in force since 1 July 2025, MCT is derived from course length, not from SCT: length ÷ 2.5 m/s for Agility courses and length ÷ 3.0 m/s for Jumping courses. A dog slower than MCT is eliminated.
Time faults
Every fraction of a second over SCT counts as a time fault: finishing in 47.35 s on a 45 s SCT costs 2.35 faults. There is no rounding in the rulebook — results are rounded only for display.
Course faults, refusals, elimination
A knocked bar, a missed contact or a missed table costs 5 faults; a refusal also costs 5. Three refusals on one run mean elimination, as does exceeding MCT or a wrong course. Placings are decided by total faults first, then by time.

What is SCT in dog agility?
Standard course time: the time a dog has to complete the course without time faults. It is the course length divided by the speed the judge sets for that class and size category.
How is MCT calculated?
Maximum course time is the course length divided by 2.5 m/s (Agility) or 3.0 m/s (Jumping), per the FCI regulations effective 1 July 2025. Exceeding it is an elimination.
How many faults is a refusal?
Five, the same as a course fault. A third refusal in the same run eliminates the dog.
Do national rules differ?
Speeds and some class rules do vary by national federation; the SCT/MCT formulas and the 5-fault penalties here follow the FCI regulations, which most European federations adopt. Check your federation’s current rulebook for class speeds.
